Trail Access in the Onaway Area
Michigan offers more than 4,000 miles of state-designated ORV trails, routes, scramble areas, and eligible forest roads — and the Onaway / Indian River corridor sits right in the middle of some of the best riding in the northern Lower Peninsula. Pigeon River Country State Forest borders the area with miles of state forest roads open to ORV use, connecting riders to a broader network throughout Cheboygan and Presque Isle Counties.
Where to Ride
The exact trail network changes by season and county ordinance, so the best move before any trip is checking the current map. RideIR.com maintains a detailed trail guide specific to the Indian River area, including difficulty ratings and connector routes — bookmark it before your trip.
Pigeon River Country State Forest also opens many of its forest roads to ORV use, giving riders direct access into 100,000+ acres of state land bordering the property. Always confirm seasonal road status before heading in, since some routes close during mud season or active logging operations.
Vehicle & Licensing Requirements
Michigan classifies ORV trails and routes by vehicle width:
- Motorcycle-only trails — maintained at 24" width
- ORV trails — maintained at 50" width
- ORV routes — maintained at 72" width
An ORV license and trail permit are required for most riding on state-designated trails — requirements vary by vehicle type and age. Always check current Michigan DNR ORV regulations before you ride.
