Michigan's Spring Ritual
Morel hunting is one of the most beloved spring traditions in Michigan, and for good reason — these wild mushrooms grow in all 83 counties of the state, can't be farmed commercially the way most produce can, and reward patience, sharp eyes, and a little local knowledge more than any GPS pin ever will.
When to Look
Michigan's morel season is a long one — typically late April through mid-June, with May as the official peak. The season moves north as the state warms: southern Michigan often sees the first morels in mid-April, while the northern Lower Peninsula and Upper Peninsula can still be producing into June.
Morels need daytime temperatures around 60°F and nighttime lows above 40°F to trigger fruiting, with soil temperatures in the 47–55°F sweet spot. The classic rule of thumb: look two to three days after a good warm rain, especially following a stretch of mild weather.
Where to Look
Morels are picky about habitat, and learning the patterns matters more than any single secret spot:
- Hardwood stands — especially ash, elm, aspen, and old apple orchards. Look for dying or dead trees with loose bark.
- South-facing slopes early in the season — these warm up first. Shift toward shadier, north-facing areas as the season progresses.
- Disturbed or burned ground — areas with recent fire activity or logging can be productive, since morels often favor disturbed soil.
- Forest edges and old orchards — transitional zones between open and wooded land are frequently productive.
Identification & Safety
Always cook morels thoroughly before eating — even true morels can cause stomach upset raw, and some people are sensitive even to properly cooked ones the first time they try them.
How to Harvest
- Cut the stem near ground level rather than pulling — this helps the underground network keep producing
- Carry your harvest in a mesh bag, which helps spread spores as you walk
- Choose young, fresh mushrooms without wormholes
- Brush clean, store in a paper bag in the refrigerator, and cook within a few days
How to Cook Them
Keep it simple: sauté in butter with a pinch of salt for about five minutes per side. Morels pair beautifully with eggs, spring asparagus, trout fresh off the Black River, or a simple cream sauce over pasta — let the earthy flavor stay the star of the dish.
